After a lackluster 2016 campaign where Griswold’s varsity football team fell to a record of three wins and seven losses, coach Gregg Wilcox remains confident that his team will have a bounceback season in 2017. “I expect us to go out there and compete every single week” said Wilcox when asked about his thoughts on the upcoming season.
Headed by first year starting quarterback, sophomore Andrew Koziol, the youthful Wolverines look to put last year behind them and move forward. When asked how he felt about an underclassman leading his offense this year, Coach Wilcox said that “[Andrew] is a talented kid, and I believe that he is ready”. Along with the quarterback position, Wilcox mentioned that there has been an influx of youth in recent years. The ECC small division, consisting of Griswold, Plainfield, Windham, and Killingly, is highly competitive year in and year out. ECC small opponents had a combined record of twenty four wins and only eight losses last season, with no team other than the Wolverines finishing with a negative record. A key focus for Griswold’s 2017 season should be increasing their efficiency within their division, they did not have a single win against divisional opponents last year. With the added incentive of bringing home the trophy on Thanksgiving day, the Wolverines’ are poised for more success against division rivals in 2017. Griswold will be on the road to Killingly, who went flawless in their division last year, for their first divisional matchup on September, 22.
Griswold football will kickoff their regular season against Capital Prep from Hartford at home on Friday at 6:30.
