Back on January 31 of this year, the Wolverine girls basketball team had to embark on a bus ride back to the high school from Putnam.  They had by all rights been taken apart by the lady clippers that night by the score of 53-22.  Points weren’t being scored, and games weren’t being won.  What was next?  The Wolverines had lost 7 out of their last 8, and at one point 5 in a row.  They had lost one of their best players to a season ending ankle injury.  Really… what’s next, what else is going to happen….

What happened is simple.  They realized just how good of a team they were.  New key players started to step up and shine.  Samantha Falco was hitting her jumper from 2 and 3 point range.  Lindsey Van Lanen gave them some extra 3 point punch off the bench after her return from injury.  The 3’s have started falling again for Hanna Clark.  Hailey Eliasson’s play has become even more tenacious and gritty letting no opportunity that’s within 15 feet of her get away, including diving for a ball.  Let’s not forget Abbie Wing who has become one of the most dominant forces in the paint within the entire ECC where every game is a double double now.

It clicked.  They clicked.  They only had 4 wins on the season.  They needed 8 for states.

Then what happened?  St Bernard WIN, Parish Hill WIN, Wheeler WIN, Montville WIN.  The lady wolverines have now won 4 in a row with their win at Montville on Saturday February 8th.  Samantha Falco and Abbie Wing led the way with 12 points each, Clark and Eliasson each added 9 each.  Griswold over Montville 49-38.

In a little over a week, the Wolverines went from a team that had lost 7 out of 8 to a team that has now won 4 in a row, and have the required number of wins to qualify for states (8).  Next up is Windham on Wednesday.  What else is going to happen?  Come to the game on Wednesday (it’s senior night) and find out for yourself.
