Small Aircraft Crash In Sterling Claims Life of Nascar Legend

On 9/15/19 at approximately 1:30 PM Troop D Danielson responded to an aircraft crash in the vicinity of 1329 Plainfield Pike in Sterling. The plane that crashed was a single engine, single seat Aerolite 103 ultralight aircraft that took off from Rincon just over the state line in Rhode Island. While the craft was turning back to go to the air field, it crashed into a wooded area adjacent to the airfield.
LIFESTAR was dispatched to the scene and was diverted back to Backus Hospital in Norwich. The pilot, NASCAR Legend Mike Stefanik died as a result of his injuries in the crash. He was 61
