On December 10, 2015 at approximately 11:21 A.M., the Plainfield Police Department received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle accident involving a single vehicle that had rolled over. The accident had occurred in the northbound lane of Norwich Road (Rt. 12) in the area of Pickett Road. As the Plainfield Police Department arrived on scene a member of Plainfield Fire Department, Keith Marandola, had driven upon the aftermath off the accident and stopped to render aid.
The operator who was identified as Alida Tavernier of Plainfield was suspended upside down in the driver seat by her seat belt as her 2006 Chevy Malibu rested on its roof. The Plainfield Fire Department along with American Legion arrived on scene and were able to safely get Tavernier out of her vehicle. Members of both Central Village and Moosup Fire Departments arrived on scene to offer further assistance.
Tavernier reported traveling northbound on Norwich Road and observed another vehicle stopped at the intersection of Pickett Road. Tavernier said she attempted to avoid the vehicle by passing on the right but struck the embankment causing her vehicle to roll over coming to a final rest on its roof in the northbound lane facing southbound.
Once removed from her vehicle Taveernier was transported by American Legion Ambulance for her injuries to the Backus Emergency Department located in Plainfield but the ambulance was diverted to Backus Emergency Room in Norwich. The section of Norwich Road (Rt. 12) was closed for a short period while getting Tavernier out of her vehicle and then to allow Plainfield Shell to upright and remove the vehicle.
This accident remains open and under investigation.
