October 1, 2020 is not that far away and if you want to fly you are going to need REAL ID designation on your drivers license or state issued ID card if you want to get onto an airplane to fly to a US destination or to enter certain federal buildings.
The REAL ID designation is a gold star on the top right of your drivers license or ID which means you are verified and able to get on to an aircraft.
According to Homeland Security, they give this definition – The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards. The purposes covered by the Act are: accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft.
If you do not have the insignia, it will be available to you free of charge if your license is up for renewal but if it isn’t, and you want that designation, you will have to pay a $30 fee.
You will have to sign up for REAL ID in person at DMV, it can’t be completed online. There, you will receive paperwork that needs to be mailed in, and the new ID will be mailed back to you.
