On 12/18/2017 at approximately 8:50am officers of the Plainfield Police Department were on the scene of a one-car versus utility pole vehicle accident on Main Street in Moosup awaiting crews from Eversource Utilities and Frontier Communications to arrive and assess the damage as the heavily damaged utility pole and low hanging wires were partially in the roadway. As officers were rerouting traffic around the accident scene a vehicle being operated by 19 year-old Isaac J. Ortiz of Moosup, failed to obey the direction of an officer and drove around the police cruiser blocking the roadway at the intersection of North Main Street and Main Street. Ortiz proceeded to drive through the dangerous accident scene heading south on Main Street. Ortiz was subsequently stopped and as officers spoke with Ortiz a strong odor of marijuana was smelled coming from Ortiz vehicle. In questioning Ortiz about the odor of marijuana, Ortiz admitted to being in possession of marijuana as well as admitted to having smoked marijuana prior to operating his vehicle today. Ortiz then failed a series of roadside field sobriety tests and was taken into custody for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs, Illegal Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Paraphernalia and Disobeying the Signal of an Officer. Ortiz was later processed and released and is scheduled to appear in the Danielson Superior Court, on 01/02/2018. As for the accident, there were no injuries reported and utility crews are expected to be on the scene for most of the day into the evening hours replacing and repairing the damaged utility lines and traffic on Main Street will continue to be rerouted.
