Police Engage in Chase of Stolen Vehicle From Norwich to Sterling

Friday morning at approximately 4:40am, Norwich Police Officers with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police arrested 45 year old Peter Smith after he initiated a police chase in a stolen box truck. The pursuit ended on Gallup Homestead Rd. in Sterling. Norwich Police Officers were called to Talman Street in Norwich after a resident had reported their vehicle had just been stolen. Officers observed the vehicle traveling west on East Main St and attempted to stop the truck. The vehicle didn’t stop and continued north on North Main Street and attempted to elude the officers. Connecticut State Police Troop E was immediately contacted when it was apparent the pursuit would lead outside of Nowich. Troop E then assisted with the pursuit that led into Sterling via I-395 North. The pursuit ended when the vehicle became disabled on a roadside culvert and intentionally struck a State Police cruiser. Peter Smith was taken into custody after a brief struggle with Officers and Troopers. A State Police K-9 was deployed to assist with the arrest. Smith was charged with 3rd degree larceny, engaging in a pursuit, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. The incident is currently under investigation
