On September 26th, 2017, there was an inspection and survey of the Pachaug Pond Dam Structure and it was noted that there was masonry missing and more seepage at the downstream face of the spillway then previously noted from precious inspections. CT DEEP State Dams recommends immediate temporary repairs while permanent design plans are being completed.
It’s being proposed that Pachaug Pond be drawn down, starting October 9th, 2017 and being maintained through the winter, with a target of closing the gate in late March or early April of 2018. Monitoring of the seepage will take place over the winter months. If there are no significant changes, the pond level will be raised to the dam crest with another inspection will take place to monitor the results of the temporary repair. If the temporary repair is determined to be satisfactory, the spillway will be allowed to draw water over the crest. The target to implement construction of the permanent repair is fall of 2018.
Local residents with boats on Pachaug Pond should consider removing them prior to the proposed slow draw down starting on Monday October 9th
