On June 16, 2019, Officer Matthew Seidel was dispatched to an address in Norwich, CT. The reporting party informed dispatchers that a relative was not in the proper frame of mind and was out of control. Officers responded to the address and were immediately confronted by a female pointing a gun at a male. Officer Seidel heard the female discharging the gun and immediately recognized the sound of a Co2 pellet gun. Officer Seidel utilized a Taser to get the female to drop the gun. The female was taken into protective custody and transported to Backus Hospital for treatment. Officer Seidel’s quick thinking and the ability to recognize the firearm was a pellet gun should be commended. It is extremely difficult to determine by looking at the pellet gun that it is not a real firearm. On a daily basis, the men and women of the Norwich Police Department are put into situations where they must make split-second decisions. We are thankful that Officer Seidel was able to remedy this situation safely. Great work Officer Seidel.
