On Friday morning at approximately 6:20 AM a working fire was reported at 119 North Main St in the borough of Jewett City. The initial report gave the wrong address of 111 and it was thought that it was the Jewett City Savings Bank on Main St that was on fire which was false. There were know occupants at 119 North Main St and the house was empty. The last known resident past away recently.
There are no theories as to how the fire started as of yet according to Fire Marshall Tom Holowaty since the investigation is ongoing at this hour (2:35 PM) on 12/13/19. Jewett City Fire Department Chief Louis Demicco Jr., stated that there was no electrical service to the house, but active to the meter and Public Utilities had to come to the area to shut off power to make if safe for firefighters to do their job.
North Main St was closed for a period of time due to the fire as state police blocked entry at the St Mary’s Church fork which divides Main St to North and East Main Sts to Green Ave. Fire departments from Jewett City, Griswold, Norwich, Taftville, Plainfield, Voluntown, Griswold, Moosup, Yantic, Lisbon, and Mohegan Tribal all responded to the call.
There is a short video the SNSN News and Discussion page on Facebook where flames start to show as it spread to the 2nd floor.
Local and State Fire Marshall’s are on scene and the fire remains under investigation.
JCFD received another call this afternoon for a report of thick smoke in the basement of a Griswold home. Firefighters went to a home on Leha Ave and it was determined that an oil burner was backed up, according to Louis Demicco Jr., JCFD Fire Chief.
