The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection closed the swimming area at Day Pond State Park in Colchester Tuesday due to the presence of indicator bacteria. Samples are collected weekly and it is unknown at this time when retesting will occur and the swimming area reopened. Silver Sands State Park in Milford and Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford were closed due to bacteria as well.
Indicator bacteria are not disease causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies.
