The Jewett City Department of Public Utilities has provided electricity to three establishments in the town for no charge. The Jewett City Fire Department, the Slater Library, and the Jewett City Little League complex. The company had been providing free electricity to the aforementioned three for approximately 30 years, as estimated by the department director, Ken Sullivan.
As of the June 30th this year, the company will cease to do so, and will begin charging the three establishments. The Jewett City Fire Department’s new yearly bill will cost $5,000-$6,000. The Slater Library’s new yearly bill will cost $4,000-$5,000, and the Jewett City Little League’s new yearly bill will cost about $2,000.
During the February 9th Board of Selectmen meeting, a utility company representative informed the board that this practice was illegal. Department Director Sullivan claims it’s not completely illegal.
