Lady Wolverines Put up Tough Fight

Tonight the Griswold Wolverines Girls Basketball team faced an up hill battle against the undefeated Portland Highlanders. The Wolverines kept the game close throughout the night and never let the game get out of hand. After only putting up 13 points last week against Plainfield,the Wolverines had a lot to prove. The game started with both teams having a tough time maintaining possession of the ball. The lady Wolverines got on the board first with two successful free-throws by Emma Dembinski. The Portland Highlanders then got on the board and finished the quarter strong, putting up fourteen points in the first quarter. The Highlanders continued to score points, thanks to Kaitlin Capello, who led the team with 4 points in that quarter. The Wolverines pulled within 8 points before the end of the first half. Sophomore Samantha Falco had the highlight play of the half with a deep three pointer. The Wolverines went on a scoring spree to begin the second half. Mandy Brehler put up four points to start the run. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the Portland Highlanders began to turn up the heat. Kaitlin Capello went on a tear and finished the third quarter with 8 points, giving the Highlanders a 37 to 24 advantage heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter began with the Wolverines continuing to turn the ball over. About mid-way through the fourth quarter, Emma Dembinski made the play of the game for the Wolverines. Dembinski attempted a lay-up and recovered her own rebound three times in a row before finally getting two points. Dembinski fouled out, finishing the night the leading scorer for the Wolverines with 13 points. Also in the fourth quarter, Dani Krapf made a deep three pointer and ended her night with ten points. As for the Highlanders, they held the lead for almost the whole night. Kaitlin Capello was the leading scorer for the Highlanders finishing with 17 points. The final score was Portland 50 and Griswold 36. Wolverine Radio broadcasted this game live on AM 1690 and on the Wolverine Radio app. The next game for the Griswold girls basketball team is January 2nd against Woodstock Academy at 7 P.M. and the next game for the lady Highlanders is Friday at 7 P.M against Old Saybrook.
