After an early exit from the ECC tournament with their loss to Windham, The Lady Wolverines wanted to show that they have come a long way this year and have evolved.  Tonight they did just that with a first round victory in the CIAC State Tournament (Class M) over 14th seeded  Goodwin Tech, 45-19.  Griswold is ranked 19th.

The beginning of the season had much promise with a strong core coming back from last year.  But, with transfers and injuries, they ladies along with Coach Babcock had to reinvent themselves and adjust a bit, especially when Sonja Matheson went down hard with a season ending ankle injury.

Tonight’s game was all Wolverines, going on a 12-2 run at one point, and the game never seriously in doubt.  Lindsey Van Lanen helped the barrage with 12 first half points, 14 total in the game.  Mandy Brehler has also come up big for Griswold as of late, she had 10 points in the contest.

Defense was key for Griswold as they forced 38 turnovers on Goodwin Tech as opposed to only 11.  Audrey Giroux led the thefts with 8, Van Lanen added 7 steals, Eliasson with 5 as Coach Babcock said that they played a lot of full court man to man defense.  Griswold also held a slight edge on rebounding, 38-34, Abbey Wing and Samantha Falco each with 6

Round 2 for the Wolverines will be against the 17-3 Holy Cross Crusaders, who are the #3 seed in the tourney.  Holy Cross defeated #30 Innovation easily, 63-22 to advance.  The game will be Thursday March 5th, 6:30 at Holy Cross, in Waterbury.
