Griswold Wrestling Hosts Action Packed Invite

On Saturday, the Griswold Wrestling team held an invite that had teams from the following 13 different schools (Woodstock Academy, Killingly, Norwich Free Academy, Suffield Academy, Stratford High, Somers, Barrington, Shepard Hill, Valley Regional, Chariho, South Kingstown, Morgan, and Haddam Killingworth). There were also 14 different weight classes. In the 106 Ib weight bracket there were 10 competitors, five had 1st round bye’s. Tyler Arsenault, of Griswold, had a bye, but was eliminated in the second round by Asim Samuel of Killingly. Samuel advanced to the finals where he was defeated by his teammate Dan Charron.

For the 113 Ib bracket, 8 wrestlers went to battle. Shea LeBeau for Griswold lost in the first round to Elena Hughes of Haddam-Killingworth. The finals for the 113 Ib bracket were between Louis Bradley of Morgan and Dave Charron of Killingly. Bradley defeated Charron to win his weight class.

The 120 Ib, and 126 Ib weight classes did not have any Wolverines. In the 120’s, Dominic Renfree of NFA defeated Mike Charron of Killingly.  The 126 class final was between Kyle Merrit of Chariho and Matt Leonard of Barrington. Merrit came out on top over Leonard.

The 132 Ib class saw two Wolverine wrestlers. Chris Dennis was defeated in the first round by Abe Cooke of Woodstock Academy. Vashil Patel, won his first round match-up against Ethan Tutt of Burrington. Patel lost his second match against Tyler Dumas from Chariho. Dumas got to the finals, but lost to Anthony Cimino from Morgan.

For the 138 Ib weight class, Hunter Barnes of Griswold fought his way to the semi-finals, but lost to Sam Burdick from Killingly. Burdick faced off against Matt Jenkins of Haddam-Killingworth in the Finals. Jenkins beat Burdick for the win in their class.

In the 145  pound class, Griswold’s Jason Jacaruso had a first round bye. Jacaruso defeated Caexar Bellamy of NFA to advance to the semi-finals. Jacaruso defeated Tim Smith from Morgan, and advanced to the finals. He then took on Dominic Bonanno of Chariho. It was not easy, but Jacaruso beat Bonanno and won the 145 class.

Griswold had two wrestlers in the 152 pound bracket. Cadan Odom and Dakota Garner both won their first round bouts. Gardner topped Neil Shady of Suffield Academy, while Odom defeated Justin Brady from Sheppard Hill. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, both wrestlers were eliminated in the second round.  Odom lost to Theran Vanase of NFA. Vanase made it all the way to the finals and beat Andrew Fortuna of Morgan.

160 Ibs – Jeff Suschana- Somers , 170 Ibs – Cameron Anderson, Chariho, 182 Ibs, Tommy Wrzesien, Chariho, 195 Ibs, Sean Holmander, South Kingstown, 220 Ibs, Devin Shaw, Chariho, 285, Jessie Polansky, Suffield Academy

  9. Stratford High, 43 points
  10. 10 Barrington, 40 points
  11. Shepard Hill, 39 points
  12. Somers, 31 points
  13. Woodstock, 30 points
  14. Valley Regional, 8 points
