Thanksgiving Football did not disappoint on Thanksgiving Day, Win or lose… Griswold/Wheeler defeated Plainfield in a game that was decided on defense and coaching. The wolverines got on the board first midway through the 2nd quarter on a 4 yd TD run by Chris Thibodeau and the extra point by Lucas Bartret… Liam Smith and the Panthers countered with under a minute to go in the half with a hail mary sort of pass for 6. Plainfield Head Coach Pat Smith decided to go for the 2 pt conversion and was unsuccessful with the Wolverines leading at the half 7-6…. Turns out that the failed 2 pt attempt was the play that eventually cost the game for the Panthers as the Wolverines held on for the win, 7-6
Even though the Wolverines won on Thanksgiving Day, and kept the Annual trophy in Griswold until they play the Panthers in Plainfield, November 2020, and although they clinched the Div III ECC Championships, they are NOT going to the state tournament. The Wolverines may or may not have been hurt by not being able to play on opening day with the cancellation of Amistad High School, ended the season ranked #10 in Class “S”. Plainfield was almost knocked out of states due to the loss against Griswold, but they held on from #4 falling to #8.
