Donald Fowler, of Griswold, first enlisted in the U.S. Army at 27 years of age and served for 4 years. Six years have passed since Fowler was discharged and attained veteran status, but now Fowler has re-enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 37 in hopes of becoming a paratrooper. Fowler will be reporting to the 10 week Army basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in August, where 90 percent of those in training with him will be younger than 30.
Despite basic training being tough the first time around, Fowler misses the military life enough that he is willing to endure the pressure once again. Fowler had intended to make the army a career the first time around, but family matters required his presence at home. Since his discharge, Fowler has moved from job to job and recently lost his job as a security officer. He now wants to return to the army, complete his twenty years, and officially retire.
