Thursday evening was time for the annual ECC tournament to get into full swing after the preliminary “play in” round was completed. (2) Griswold Defeated (7) Wheeler 62-50, but it wasn’t easy. Wheeler earned the right to play Griswold on Thursday evening after they beat Tourtellotte the night before eliminating the Tigers from the tournament.
In the first half, Wheeler played their typical fast paced up and down the court tempo to pull ahead forcing many mistakes from the Wolverines. Wheeler also committed mental mistakes with bad passes the ended in turnovers, but Griswold seemed to play with no sense of urgency and almost let the game get away from them trailing at the half, 26-20. Lucas Jones had a couple of 3 pt baskets as well as Ian Spracklin having one in the 2nd quarter.
The 3rd quarter has been somewhat of an Achilles heel for the Wolverines coming out of the locker most nights. Tonight was not that night as the Wolverines scored more points in the 3rd (28) than they did in the entire first half. 3 Point shooting Ninja CJ Mattson had a rough first half going just 1 for 8 in 3 Point territory. Mattson hit 4 in a row in the 3rd, including one than another off a steal (2 3 pt baskets in less than 5 seconds) as the Wolverines ended the 3rd up by 5, an 11 point swing from the first half. Griswold kept the same control into the 4th, holding Lucas Jones to a single FG in the 2nd half.
Mattson led all scorers with 18, Pharaoh Curtis 13, and Chris Roddy added 10. Griswold also got more quality minutes from Tyler Green (7 pts) as the Lions didn’t know what to do with the aggressive inside play of the 6’6″ junior. See photos below. Photo Credit: Kay Matty
