Griswold Girls Volleyball continues to roll on and going full speed ahead within the CIAC State Volleyball Championships. The Wolverines started the tournament drawing a #12 seed and facing #21 Housatonic out of Canaan.
The Wolverines have defeated Whitney Tech, Holy Cross, and the aforementioned Housatonic. They didn’t just beat these 3 teams, the Wolverines have yet to lose a set within the state tournament winning 3-0 each time and now find themselves in the state semifinals.
Sounds pretty good, right? Well it seems to be status quo when you get to this level of play since 3 out of the 4 teams remaining in Class S play have yet to lose a set in the tournament. The only team to lose a set thus far, Coventry, who lost a set to Coginchaug in the 2nd round.
Who does Griswold face in the Semifinals? Yep, Coventry. Is that a good thing for Griswold? Not necessarily! Both teams have faced East Lyme and Woodstock Academy this year. Coventry lost to Woodstock Academy, Griswold defeated them. However, Coventry beat East Lyme, Griswold lost to East Lyme.
This all pretty much adds up to nothing. Both teams have had common opponents. Both have lost to a team that the other has beaten. Their records are fairly similar. Coventry is 17-6 and Griswold 15-7. They go head to head on Tuesday, November 16, for the right to play in the finals against the winner between #2 Granby and #3 Lyman Memorial.
The finals are on 11/20, one week from today (as of this writing) in East Haven.
