The first round of the CIAC State Girls Volleyball tournament started on Monday with a whole host of local schools in action, Griswold and Plainfield both advancing.
In class “S” #12 Griswold swept #21 Housatonic High School (Canaan, Ct.) 25-6, 25-6, 25-11. The ECC Athlete of the week, Kuranda Ruggiero led the charge for the lady wolverines with 19 assists, 8 kills, 8 aces, and 4 digs. However, she had plenty of help with the play of Abby Matheson (6 kills, 3 aces, 1 dig), Makayla Neilson (6 kills, 2 blocks, 1 dig), and Senior Sonja Matheson (5 kills, 3 aces, 6 digs).
Head Coach James Bruno said of the match, “The girls came out really strong tonight! We served really well and put Housatonic on their heels early. It was a real team effort with everyone contributing to the performance.”
Next up, Griswold travels to #5 Whitney Tech (Hamden, Ct) for a 6 PM start on Wednesday.
It’s very possible that if Griswold wins this matchup, we may be looking at a potential Griswold/Plainfield matchup. #18 Plainfield advanced on Monday defeating #15 Windham, (25-13. 25-15, 15-25, 25-22). Plainfield would have to get passed would have to go through #2 Granby for that to happen.
