If you are a Griswold sports fan, then this past weekend you had a lot to cheer about!
It did start with a tough loss for the Lady Wolverines soccer team as they traveled to Ferrigno Field in Windham and took the loss, 5-0. The Griswold Boys soccer team made up for the tough loss by defeating the New London Whalers, in New London, 2-0. The boys are home to Wheeler on Monday 10/18.
It would continue to go up from there.
The Lady Wolverine Volleyball team had to face Waterford away. The ladies had already faced the Lady Lancers once this season back on 9/27, and lost 3-1. They weren’t interested in a repeat, although it was going to be a tough contest since the loss was at home, and Friday they had to travel to Waterford.
The first game didn’t go the way of the Wolverines, losing 26-28 but the team ended up taking the next two out of three to force a deciding game 5 in which they won, 15-11.
The breakdown of all 5 were as follows:
26-28, 25-23, 13-25, 25-20, 15-11
Kuranda Ruggiero had 32 assists, 4 kills, and 8 digs. Hailey Eliasson added 34 digs, Sonja Matheson with 17 kills, 14 digs, and 2 aces, and Kierra Neilson offered up with 6 kills and 4 blocks.
Next for the girls soccer team will be Lyman Memorial at home on Monday, 10/18.
But… as they say… Wait there’s more!
Needless to say, the Griswold/Wheeler Wolverine football team has had a less than stellar year, losing their first 3 games by a combined score of 136-15 with drubbings from Ledyard and Stonington although you could start to see the Wolverines turning the corner a little after a couple of players returned from injury as well as Kyle Kessler who is a complete game changer for the Wolverines who can seemingly gear up to a full speed stride after only a couple of steps.
Kessler didn’t disappoint. From the 2nd play from scrimmage, Kessler took a handoff from Cassidy and found space on the right side and charged 91 yards for a touchdown. Kessler finished the night with just under 200 yards rushing in 3 quarters of action against Bassick out of Bridgeport. Wolverines finish strong with a win, their first of the season, 42-8. Next up for Griswold/Wheeler will be Windham on 10/22 at Ferrigno Field. Both teams are 1-3 on the season with the Whippetts lone victory coming against East Lyme, 26-23, on 10/1.
Great weekend to be a Wolverine fan! Maybe it was the excitement of homecoming week, who knows, but something has propelled the sports program this weekend proving to all of us that the Griswold Wolverines are alive and well and can make it happen in all sporting contests!
