Girls High School Basketball: Griswold Gets Back in the Win Column
Samantha Falco came out of the gates big in Saturday’s contest against St. Bernards in their 40-36 win. Falco scored 9 of her 11 points in the first quarter alone to help put the lady Wolverines up 18-6 at the end the first quarter.
St. Bernards didn’t want to be denied as the Saints came marching right back into the game as they started the 2nd quarter going on an 8-0 run to get back into the game, 18-14. Coach Babcock concerned, called a quick time out to re-group. After the tine out, St. Bernards drilled a 3 making it an 11-0 run. Lindsey Van Lanen stopped the bleeding sinking a 3 point shot in the next possession. However, the Saints came back with yet another 3 pointer and a made free throw tying the game at 21. Van Lanen added another 3. Wolverines up at the half, 26-24.
The scoring came to a virtual halt in the 3rd quarter as the first point scored didn’t come until half way through the 3rd when Mandy Brehler hit a free throw. St. Bernards did take the lead for the first time in the 3rd with a field goal putting the Saints up 29-27. But, just before the end of the 3rd, Kaylee Gagnon hit a three to put the Wolverines up for good, 30-29.
The Saints did tie the game a couple of times in the 4th quarter, but never regained the lead. With the score tied, Van Lanen missed a baseline jumper but followed her own shot for the go ahead basket. St. Bernards in effort to stop the clock, fouled Hailey Eliasson and came up clutch draining both free throws to finalize the victory for the Lady Wolverines.
Griswold was tough on the glass with 31 rebounds compared to 17 for St. Bernards

The Wolverines improve their record to 5-10 and still need to find 3 more wins to get into state play. They will have to win out of their last 5 with Parish Hill coming to Griswold on Monday night, game time 7:00 PM. The Lady Saints fall to 6-9, losing their last 5.
