Wednesday afternoon a black 4 wheel drive pickup truck was travelling towards the borough on Slater Ave when just past Surrells Pizza and Pub the driver of the pickup ran head on into a telephone on her right snapping it in half, causing wires to be down across the road. Many business’ have lost power and according to Ken Sullivan, the dir of JCDPU, he stated that some people may not be until later tonight. Slater ave is also closed to through traffic at this time. The driver of the pickup was being tended to by American Ambulance but was not transported. Jewett City Fire Dept was also on scene along with Connecticut State Police
According to Jewett City Dept of Public Utilities Director Ken Sullivan, Frontier Communications who own the pole that was knocked over in the pictures above had to go back to Willimantic to their offices to get a special piece of equipment to dig out the remainder of the broken utility pole that was still in the ground. Sullivan estimates that Frontier should be done with their end of the job in about 30-45 minutes as of this update. After that, then JCDPU will be able to work on the wiring. The estimated time that the job should be complete is between 10p-11p this evening. Also Sullivan said that 90% of the customers that had suffered loss of service was back on within an hour but there is still roughly 10% without. Those customers can expect to be restored this evening by 11pm at which time Slater Ave will be re-opened once again.
