Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is warning swimmers and boaters to avoid the Quinebaug River in the vicinity of the Route 101 bridge.
A 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman, both from Danielson, were swimming in the Quinebaug River around 7 p.m. when they were bitten by a beaver, DEEP officials.
The unidentified man and woman received stitches at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, DEEP officials.
EnCon Police searched the area and located a beaver “exhibiting aggressive behavior” near the Route 101 bridge. However, the EnCon Police were unable to capture the animal.
“There have been occasional cases of a healthy beaver being aggressive toward humans. There have also been a few cases when tests have shown a beaver to be infected with rabies. It is unclear if the beaver in the Quinebaug was healthy or had rabies,” DEEP said in a statement on Tuesday.
DEEP officials said they do not believe the beaver is making a home near the Route 101 bridge. But, they did spot a beaver dam and other beavers in the bank of the Quinebaug River just south the attack.
