Colchester Attorney Arrested for Stealing From Estate

Earlier today, officers from the the Connecticut State Police Troop “K”, Colchester successfully executed an arrest warrant for former Colchester attorney, John W. Butts. Butts is charged with one felony count of first degree larceny by extortion. The charge results from a series of incidents that took place between February 5, 2016 to February 27, 2017. During that time, Mr. Butts had been retained as an estate attorney by the alleged victim, Ms. Kimberly Ann Corbett. Ms. Corbett had retained Mr. Butts to represent her as the Executrix and sole Fiduciary of her deceased father’s estate. Her father was, Robert J. Cowen, formerly of Colchester.
The warrant issued for Mr. Butts alleges that Ms. Corbett was owed $154,502.03 as the net proceeds from her father’s estate. An investigation conducted by Sgt. Martin Martinez of Troop K, and Inspector Matthew Schroeder of the CT Division of Criminal Justice revealed that former attorney Butts allegedly used the full proceeds due Ms. Corbett for his personal use. Butts had previously been placed on interim suspension by the CT Bar Foundation on February 27, 2017.
Bond was set at $155,000.00. John W. Butts is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on January 25, 2018.
