On April 8, 2018 at approximately 5:00 PM members of the Plainfield Police Department responded to the Town of Plainfield Animal Control Office located at 5 Unity Street in Moosup, Connecticut for a report of a stolen dog.

Upon arrival it was determined that the Animal Control Office was broken into and a German Shepard was stolen.  At the time, the German Shepard “Vada” was being quarantined due to four (4) dog bites with the most recent incident occurring on January 20, 2018 in which two juveniles were injured.  This investigation has revealed that the dog was stolen from this secured facility sometime between the late night hours of April 7-8, 2018.

Through a lengthy investigation working closely with Roxboro Police Department, Person County Police Department, and Person County Animal Control Office of North Carolina the Plainfield Police Department Special Investigations Unit recovered the dog at 1060 Wren Crumpton Road in Roxboro, North Carolina and transported it back to Connecticut. The dog was found in the possession of the owner, Sean Simmons (31 years old), formerly of Wauregan, Connecticut.Ó

Through investigation detectives were able to discover that Simmons paid Benjamin Audet (34 years old) of 22 Canterbury Road in Plainfield, Connecticut to break into the Animal Control Office and steal the dog for Simmons, who would be moving to North Carolina that morning. Upon entering the facility Audet could not successfully steal the dog himself due to being afraid of Vada biting him. Simmons ultimately had to help Audet retrieve the dog at which point he himself was bit. Upon successfully taking the dog it was then transported to North Carolina.

On June 9, 2018 at approximately 11:36 PM Audet was placed under arrest due to an active warrant. Audet was charged with Burglary 3rd Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary 3rdDegree, and Larceny 6th Degree.  Audet was released on a court set $5,000.00 surety bond and was scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on June 25, 2018.
