It’s good to be thinking about filing your taxes as early as possible but don’t hand your hard-earned money over just yet, because some of you may be able to get them done for free.
Everybody likes free, and now a program to file your taxes for free is expanding. The VITA program, which is a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, offers free income tax help for those who qualify. Those who make $54,000 a year or less are eligible to use the program, and refunds can be issued in as little as 14 days.
If you are unsure of the right questions to ask, or you don’t know which are the right forms to use, it’s best to go to a VITA site where they are trained and certified every year.
The VITA trained personnel will be available at the American Jobs Center, at 133 Salem Turnpike in Norwich, from January 26-April 12. An appointment is required and can be made by calling 860-425-6597.
As tax season is now officially upon us, everyone needs to know and be informed about the latest phone tax scam.
If you have a problem with your tax return, The IRS is not going to call you. They’re going to send you a lot of letters first, so if you get a call, it’s not the IRS demanding you wire them money immediately.
If you think you might owe money, contact a tax professional for help – don’t give money over the phone. It’s also a good idea to file as early as possible so someone doesn’t try to file on your behalf.
